Melissa Whitfield Aslund, Ph.D.
Dr. Melissa Whitfield Aslund currently holds a position at Intrinsik Environmental Sciences as a Scientist in our Mississauga office. She has a Ph.D. in Environmental Science (Chemistry) from the Royal Military College of Canada and an undergraduate degree in Math and Biology from Queen’s University. Her research and professional experience to date has focused on assessing the impacts of environmental contaminants on ecosystems and human health as well as exploring the application of robust statistical techniques to address environmental issues. She has authored or co-authored more than 15 peer-reviewed research articles in the fields of ecotoxicology, human health risk assessment and ecological risk assessment. She has also taught Environmental Toxicology at the undergraduate level at the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus.
- Experience assessing risk from pesticides to endangered species, mammals, birds, terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates, and plants (deterministic and probabilistic)
- Conducted ecological risk assessment of petroleum hydrocarbons in soil and vegetation
- Participated in public meetings to communicate human health risks of various issues including wind turbine noise
- Provided statistical services and support for projects including community health and biomonitoring, occupational exposure, and avian pesticide toxicity evaluation
